Rhode Island House Speaker William Murphy is promoting casino gambling as a way to bring much needed tax revenue to the state.
Murphy said he "would not be averse" to a 2010 ballot question that asks voters to allow full-scale gambling there.
Murphy previously pushed for a ballot proposal, back in 2006, to make way for a Narragansett Indian casino in West Warwick financed by Harrah’s.
The speaker said that as neighboring Massachusetts mulls building resort-style casinos, Rhode Island needs to defend its gambling revenues.
A recent report indicated that approximately 40 percent of the gambling-related dollars that came into the state treasury last year — about $117.4 million — were from Massachusetts residents.
Murphy’s musings came just a day after he announced he would leave the General Assembly when his term ends.
