Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Mass.) defended his plan to add three casinos in his state, claiming the expanded gambling will create $2 billion annually in economic activity and add 20,000 permanent jobs.

New Casinos to Boost Massachusetts Economy by $2 billion

 
The proposal could have a massive impact across the Northeastern U.S. A Democrat elected to his first term last November, Patrick has proposed licensing three "resort-style" casinos in Massachusetts, distributed across the western, southeastern and greater metro Boston areas.

Patrick said the plan will generate up to $450 million in annual tax revenue, which will fund property tax relief and upgrades to roads and bridges, which are much needed in the bay state.
The governor said he studied gambling in other states before announcing his decision last month to support casinos in Massachusetts.

Rhode Island Interested

Nearby Rhode Island currently permits limited gambling, with two licensed slot parlors, but lacks a full-fledged casino.
Rhode Island House Speaker William Murphy has said lawmakers will study whether to add card tables to the state's two slot parlors and will also consider whether to build a casino.
Patrick faces opposition from legislators including House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, who has warned against creating a "casino culture."
Patrick sought to downplay them by citing research that he said showed that only a tiny percentage of casino visitors were problem gamblers.
"It is a problem, but it is a manageable one," Patrick said
